Deals on Wheels: All Insurers To Offer Winter Tire Discounts

Ontario Helping Drivers Be Safer While Saving on Auto Insurance

MISSISSAUGA, ON – As drivers start to prepare for winter driving conditions, the government is reminding Ontarians that as of January 1, 2016, all insurers will be required to offer a discount for the use of winter tires.

Winter tires enhance safety and reduce the likelihood of accidents by improving traction, braking and handling in frost, snow, slush and under cold and icy conditions.

The government is moving forward with its plan to help reduce auto insurance costs for drivers. The winter tire discount is one of the initiatives announced in the 2015 Budget to protect auto insurance consumers and ensure affordable premiums.

Reducing auto insurance rates is part of the government's plan to build Ontario up. The four-part plan includes investing in people's talents and skills, making the largest investment in public infrastructure in Ontario's history, creating a dynamic, innovative environment where business thrives and building a secure retirement savings plan.

“I was pleased to be an early advocate for reducing the cost of auto insurance to consumers. We’ve introduced important and necessary reforms to the auto insurance system to reduce costs and lower premiums. This winter season, drivers across Ontario will be able to save on their auto insurance if they install winter tires. We also want to remind consumers that, as with any insurance, auto insurance coverage is highly individualized. Drivers should shop around for the best possible rates that meet their needs.”

  • Winter tires that are in good condition can shorten braking distances by as much as 25 per cent.
  • It is up to the insurer to determine the amount for the winter tire discount and the documentation that may be required from drivers.
  • Ontario’s accident benefits coverage is the most generous among provinces with private marketplace systems.
